Peace on the Platform

Peace on the Platform letter |
Our Peace Homework assignment for the summer of 2004 is to urge the national political parties to make peace an explicit priority in their respective platforms. Those of us working for peace know that in order to prevent war we must recognize that peace is not merely the absence of armed conflict; it is also an economic, political and societal agenda that must be advanced through dialogue between citizens and our elected officials. Getting "Peace on the Platform" is AMP's way of advancing that dialogue in this critical election year.
WHAT IS "PEACE ON THE PLATFORM"?
Our Peace on the Platform campaign consists of a letter addressed to the chairpersons of each political party urging them to put specific language in their party's 2004 platform. Here's what the letter says:
War is not healthy for children and other living things.
|
Who could disagree? Yet war persists because peacemaking is not a national priority. Our political parties have not led the way to peace. As Chairperson of your party you are responsible for your party's platform.
Therefore, I urge you to place the following language in your party's 2004 Platform.
|
Peace is a National Priority
The pursuit of peace must be an integral policy of our government. As leaders we must be committed to its accomplishment with the same dedication to preventing war that we demonstrate in preparing for war. The threat from terrorism and weapons of mass destruction makes peace a practical necessity. Peace is, and must be, a national priority.

|
Getting Peace on the Platform is just the first step. After the election, I expect to see actions that make these powerful words real. Our elected officials must see to it that our children are educated as peacemakers and our citizens have jobs that do not depend upon warmaking.
Our children and all living things depend upon you!
